The course of treatment will depend upon the type of mesothelioma and location of tumor, the size of tumor, the degree to which the cancer has spread, the age of the patient, his overall health etc. A team of specialists would be involved in the treatment of the desease like an oncologist (cancer specialist), pulmonologist (lung specialist), radiologist etc.
Surgery can be performed on mesothelioma patients either with the aim of curing it or for keeping the patient more comfortable and impdroving the quality of life. Mostly, curative surgery is not an option since the disease is diagnosed at a later stage. Radiation is often recommended for patients whose health is too weak for surgery. It has lesser side effects than chemotherapy and is easier to tolerate.
